Picky eating is very common in childhood and can worsen or persist depending on how we as parents and caregivers respond. It is worrisome when our kids don’t appear to be eating enough or often enough to support their growth. Being equipped with information about how to handle picky eaters gives you the tools to keep meal-times peaceful and support a positive relationship with food and body image for your child’s lifetime.
Resolving picky eating is a journey that involves addressing the following pieces:
-
The child’s relationship with food (ex. grazing, limited acceptance, challenges with texture, etc.)
-
Identifying if and what makes things worse (ex. illness, pressure from caregivers, lack of structure/rules)
-
Creating roles and expectations for both you and your child, so that there are natural consequences and we prevent conflict
-
Monitoring your child's growth and habits, to provide additional support and encouragement (ex. getting them in the kitchen, access to fun foods, etc.)
When we work together to address picky eating, we will:
-
Evaluate the items above & expand on them to create goals and milestones specific to your child & family
-
Build & implement a plan that works within all areas of the child's life (home, time with other caregivers, school, etc)
-
Monitor & adjust the plan as you implement it based on where the child is excelling or needs additional support
